Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Food and Drug Administration data sharing

If enacted, the Food and Drug Administration would be allowed to share unredacted food-safety information with State, local, Tribal, and Territorial public-health authorities. Types of information would include surveillance data, laboratory testing and sampling results, inspection findings, recall distribution lists, and consumer complaints. The FDA could share this information as soon as is reasonably practicable. Recipients would generally be barred from further disclosing the information without FDA permission, except when disclosure is needed to stop an outbreak, carry out a recall, or for State enforcement. The change would take effect upon enactment.

Longer food-safety grant awards

If enacted, the maximum duration for grants under the food-safety grant program in section 1009 would increase from 3 years to 5 years. The change would apply only to grants awarded on or after the date of enactment. If the Secretary conducts a program evaluation, funding in later years of a grant would be contingent on a successful evaluation conducted after the first year. The change would take effect upon enactment.
