Sponsored By: Representative Collins, Mike [R-GA-10]

Introduced

Summary

Would require the VA to share veterans' opioid prescription histories with non-Department Community Care providers and with Third Party Administrators as defined in law. This change is meant to give outside clinicians timely access to VA opioid records to support safer prescribing and care coordination.

Show full summary
  • Veterans and patients: Veterans receiving Community Care would have their VA opioid prescription history available to clinicians outside the VA, which could help avoid duplicate prescriptions and inform treatment decisions.
  • Community Care providers: Non-Department doctors and clinics would get VA opioid history for covered veterans to better coordinate care and make clinical decisions about pain management and prescribing.
  • Third Party Administrators: Entities defined under 38 U.S.C. 1703B would serve as the conduit for transmitting those opioid prescription records between the VA and Community Care providers.
