Bill Overview
Analyzed Economic Effects
2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.
Asylum only at ports, no parole
If enacted, people who arrive at a U.S. port of entry could apply for asylum only at that port. DHS would not be able to parole or release those port applicants into the United States while processing. This port-only rule would not cover people caught after entering without inspection or after an overstay. Their cases would follow other asylum processing rules. These changes would take effect upon enactment.
Homeland Security can run asylum cases
If enacted, the bill would let either the Attorney General or the Secretary of Homeland Security handle asylum duties. It would replace each "Attorney General" reference with "Attorney General or the Secretary of Homeland Security, as applicable." This could change which agency processes cases or issues procedures, but it would not by itself change who can get asylum.
