Officer Wellness and Peer Support Act of 2026
Sponsored By: Representative Gillen, Laura [D-NY-4]
Introduced
Summary
Improve mental health care and peer support for law enforcement officers. This bill would require the Attorney General to submit, within 270 days, a report to the House and Senate Judiciary Committees listing best practices to reduce stigma, encourage mental health screening and peer-to-peer counseling, and ensure confidentiality for services such as critical incident stress debriefings and peer crisis lines. The report must include implementation recommendations and be prepared after consulting the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, the FBI, the National Institute of Justice, and relevant federal, state, Tribal, and local law enforcement, labor, academic, and mental health stakeholders. It defines "law enforcement officer" to include police, corrections, probation, parole, and judicial officers.
