  • Community planners and emergency managers would get public maps and related data to guide land-use decisions and emergency planning.
  • USGS and researchers would study short-term and long-term sinkhole triggers, including extreme storms, prolonged drought, shifts in water use, and aquifer depletion.

New public maps of sinkhole risk

If enacted, the U.S. Geological Survey would set up a program to spot sinkhole hazards. It would study causes like big storms, drought, aquifer depletion, and other water-use changes. It would make maps showing areas at higher risk, using 3D elevation data. The maps would be posted on a public website with information for planners and emergency managers. The agency would review the maps at least once every five years. Homeowners and renters in risk areas would be able to check the maps to plan and reduce risk. This program would only move forward if Congress provides money in advance.
