Introduced
Summary
Transparency on water and energy use by covered data centers is the bill's main aim. This bill would direct the Department of Energy to report to Congress within 2 years and annually after that on how certain data centers use public water and electricity and on who paid to connect them to the power grid.
Show full summary
- Data center operators: Covered data centers would be listed in reports showing the amount of public water they use, how much of that water is recycled, and average daily water use for continuously supplied sites.
- Federal policymakers and regulators: Reports would include the number of covered centers that generate all their electricity and the number that are electricity consumers, plus the costs to connect centers to the bulk-power system and who paid those costs.
- Local water systems and communities: The reports would reveal how much public water data centers draw, giving communities data about local water demand.
- Grid planners and utilities: Information on connection costs and which facilities are self-generating would help planning for bulk-power system impacts.
