New methane removal research program
If enacted, the Department of Energy would create a Methane Removal Research Initiative within one year. The initiative would fund research by national labs, universities, and private companies on methods to remove or break down methane in the air, including biological, chemical, and new materials approaches. The bill would authorize $25 million each year for fiscal years 2027 through 2031 to carry out the program. The Secretary would report to the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee and the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee starting three years after enactment and every three years after that on activities, progress, knowledge gaps, resource needs, and recommendations.
