Military Housing Innovation Act
Sponsored By: Representative Peters, Scott H. [D-CA-50]
Introduced
Summary
Allow point-access block design in military housing. This bill would require a targeted, interagency study on whether revising the Department of Defense building code to permit point-access block residential buildings would affect housing supply, costs, and safety.
Show full summary
- Military families and single service members could see changes in the supply and quality of on-base housing if the design increases buildable units or speeds construction. The study would quantify effects on housing availability and the propensity of members to seek private housing and would estimate impacts on Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS).
- The Department of Defense and military builders would get a cost and feasibility picture. The report must quantify design and construction costs and whether projects can start on lots that are now hard to develop.
- Local rental markets and nearby communities would be assessed for changes in rental availability near installations.
- Fire and life safety officials would get a direct comparison of outcomes for point-access block buildings versus other designs, including sprinkler coverage, smoke detection, ventilation, egress, and fire loss history.
