Became Law
Summary
CPI-based periodic review of SGLI and VGLI maximum coverage. This law requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to compare the automatic maximum coverage amount to a Consumer Price Index adjusted benchmark on January 1, 2026 and every five years after.
Show full summary
- Servicemembers and veterans: The law sets a CPI-linked benchmark equal to $500,000 multiplied by the five-year average change in the Consumer Price Index. That benchmark is used to compare and to guide potential increases to automatic coverage within the existing administrative increment rules.
- Families: Periodic reviews aim to keep automatic payouts more in line with inflation so benefits better match rising living costs.
- Department of Veterans Affairs and Congress: VA must complete the review on January 1, 2026 and every five years thereafter and submit the results to the House and Senate Veterans' Affairs Committees for consideration.

Regular inflation review of military life insurance
Beginning January 1, 2026, VA reviews the maximum for group life insurance for servicemembers and veterans every five years. VA compares the current maximum to a number tied to inflation. That number equals $500,000 times the average percentage change in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers over the prior five fiscal years. CPI-U is published by the Labor Department. VA sends the results to the House and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committees. The review can guide later increases, but it does not by itself raise anyone’s coverage.
