119-hres-1285119th Congress

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that over 25 years of real-world evidence and hundreds of peer-reviewed studies proving that mifepristone is safe and effective should be respected, and law and policy governing access to lifesaving, time-sensitive medication abortion care in the United States should be equitable, transparent, and based on the best available peer-reviewed evidence-based science.

Sponsored By: Representative DeGette, Diana [D-CO-1]

Introduced

Summary

Preserve and expand access to mifepristone through telemedicine, pharmacy dispensing, and mail. This measure would say more than 25 years of peer‑reviewed evidence show mifepristone is safe and effective and that FDA safety rules should not create unnecessary barriers to care.

Show full summary
  • Pregnant people and families: Would support wider use of telemedicine and mail or pharmacy dispensing to reduce travel and delays and to protect privacy. Medication abortion made up about 63 percent of abortions in 2023.
  • Marginalized communities: Would highlight that Black and Indigenous people, people of color, immigrants, people with lower incomes, rural residents, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, and survivors of intimate partner violence are disproportionately harmed by access restrictions.
  • Health system and regulators: Would affirm FDA authority to impose Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies only when necessary and note the 2021 and 2023 REMS changes that let certified pharmacies and prescribers dispense mifepristone in person or by mail.
