Introduced
Summary
Recognize stroke as a national health crisis. This bill would push coordinated federal action to improve prehospital stroke care, speed routing to thrombectomy-capable centers, and expand public education about stroke.
Show full summary
- Patients and families: Would aim to increase timely access to mechanical thrombectomy for large vessel occlusion strokes, which make up about 15 to 30 percent of strokes while only 3 to 7 percent of eligible patients currently receive thrombectomy.
- Emergency medical services and state systems: Would support a standardized EMS training curriculum for stroke and LVO recognition and urge States and regional systems to adopt routing protocols. Current gaps include that just 15 percent of EMS medical directors provide stroke education biannually and 33 percent use the American Stroke Association EMS curriculum.
- Hospitals and underserved communities: Would call for transparency on stroke center capabilities and outcomes and encourage Federal and State investment in public stroke education. It affirms equitable access to mechanical thrombectomy and comprehensive stroke care regardless of geography.
