Families and children: Highlights the youth toll, noting each year more than 4,400 children and teens are killed and more than 17,000 are shot and wounded.
Communities and memorials: Frames the day as a tribute to victims like Hadiya Pendleton and urges local leaders and neighbors to meet and discuss ways to make communities safer.
Veterans: Calls attention to veteran-focused prevention by noting that more than 88,000 military veterans died by gun suicide from 2004 to 2023.
National scale: Points to the broader scope of the problem with nearly 47,000 gun deaths annually and at least 406 mass shooting incidents in 2025.
