Recognizing the significance of "Chicano/Chicana Heritage Month" in August as an important time to celebrate the significant contributions of Mexican Americans to the history of the United States.

Sponsored By: Representative Correa, J. Luis [D-CA-46]

Introduced

Summary

Designate August as Chicano/Chicana Heritage Month. This bill would recognize the month and encourage communities to hold events that celebrate Mexican American contributions to U.S. history, culture, science, labor, and civil rights. It cites leaders and milestones such as Ellen Ochoa, Dolores Huerta, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, Emigdio Vasquez, Hernandez v. Texas, and Westminster v. Mendez. The resolution notes about 37 million Chicano/Chicana immigrants, roughly 61.5 percent of the U.S. Latino population, and says Chicano/Chicana people make up about 12 percent of the U.S. population. The measure is symbolic and educational and encourages observance and awareness.
