Summary
This bill would honor Massillon's 200th anniversary and recognize the city's historical and civic contributions. It would note Massillon's founding on December 6, 1826, its location on the east bank of the Tuscarawas River, and that the land lies on the traditional homelands of the Lenape, Shawnee, Wyandot, Miami, Ottawa, Seneca-Cayuga, Chippewa, Potawatomi, and tribes now part of the Peoria Tribe. The resolution recounts the Treaty of Greenville cession, the merger of four villages that became Massillon, Kendal's 1812 settlement and the Rotch farmhouse role in the Underground Railroad, and the 1828 Ohio and Erie Canal boost. It highlights that Massillon hosted the 1852 founding of the Ohio Women’s Rights Association, incorporated in 1853, earned the nickname “City of Champions,” and produced a notable football legacy including coaches Matt Campbell and Paul Brown. The bill also recognizes the Massillon Museum and encourages continued civic pride and innovation for the community's future.
