Show full summary
This resolution would designate September 2026 as National Voting Rights Month and push Congress, schools, and the public to defend access to the ballot.
- Voters and communities: Encourages everyone to uphold the right to vote and highlights historical and modern suppression. It notes about 4 million people are disenfranchised because of felony convictions, including 1 in 16 Black adults.
- Congress and lawmakers: Urges Congress to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2025 to restore and modernize key Voting Rights Act protections and to oppose the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which the resolution says could block millions from voting.
- Schools and educators: Recommends public schools and universities teach the history of voter suppression and practical steps like how to register and where to vote.
- Postal recognition: Expresses appreciation for the U.S. Postal Service issuing a Representative John R. Lewis stamp on September 19, 2023.
- Public outreach: Invites Congress to allocate funds for public service announcements across TV, radio, print, social media, billboards, buses, and other media to remind people about elections and registration deadlines.
