Summary

This resolution would designate September 2026 as "Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month" and encourage public programs to raise awareness of the sickle cell trait, prevention, care, and treatments. Sickle cell disease affects about 100,000 people in the U.S., causes severe pain and organ damage, and results in roughly 1,800–2,000 births each year. More than 2 million Americans carry the sickle cell trait, including about 1 in 13 Black Americans. The resolution notes FDA approvals of two cell-based gene therapies in 2023 and an expanded Casgevy approval in July 2026, and it calls for more research and public outreach to improve early detection, preventive care, and patient services.
