This resolution would recognize Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's six decades of scientific achievement. It notes PNNL began in 1965 when Battelle took over the Hanford Laboratories to support plutonium production and nuclear cleanup and later became one of the Department of Energy's most diversified national labs. The text highlights growth from just over 2,200 employees in 1965 to more than 6,400 today, $1.6 billion in research and development in fiscal year 2024, 319 invention disclosures, and 59 patents granted. It also spotlights work on nuclear cleanup, earth systems, modernizing the energy grid, energy storage and resilience, salmon recovery, nuclear nonproliferation, cyber defense, AI for science, partnerships with over 60 universities, and STEM outreach to more than 51,000 students and 900 educators.
