Summary
This resolution would designate "Guam War Survivors Remembrance Day" to honor the resilience and extraordinary courage of CHamoru survivors who endured nearly three years of Imperial Japanese occupation. It recounts that the invasion began December 8, 1941, that about 18,000 CHamoru were imprisoned at sites such as Manenggon, that roughly 1,170 civilians died representing nearly 10 percent of the island's population, that survivors aided the U.S. advance to retake Guam on July 21, 1944, that over $38.0 million in combined federal and local reparations have been awarded, and that Americans should observe the day with appropriate ceremonies on its 10th anniversary on June 28, 2025.
