Sponsored By: Representative McIver, LaMonica [D-NJ-10]
Introduced
Summary
Honors the victims and recognizes the lasting impact of the 1967 Newark riots. The resolution would recount that the unrest ran from July 12 to July 17, 1967, led to 26 deaths, more than 700 injuries, and over 1,400 arrests, and followed the arrest and brutal treatment of Black taxi driver John William Smith. It would note the deployment of about 7,900 National Guard and State Police personnel, highlight systemic racism, economic inequality, and policing failures identified by the Lilley and Kerner Commissions, and commit to supporting efforts to address racial and economic disparities, promote equitable policing, and strengthen community engagement.
