House creates Jan. 6 inquiry panel
The House establishes a special Judiciary subcommittee to investigate January 6, 2021. It has up to 8 members; the Speaker appoints all, with up to 3 in consultation with the minority leader, and names the chair. It must file a final report to the Judiciary Committee by December 31, 2026. It ends 30 days after filing that report or on the last day of the 119th Congress, whichever is earlier. House Administration transfers related records within 7 days, and after the panel ends the Judiciary Committee keeps the records as the legal successor. The panel investigates but cannot mark up bills.
Subpoenas and depositions for Jan. 6 probe
The chair can issue subpoenas for documents and written answers by interrogatory. After consulting the ranking minority member, the chair can order depositions by members or counsel; depositions follow procedures printed in the Congressional Record on January 14, 2025. The chair can let members question witnesses for longer than five minutes and allow staff to question witnesses. The subcommittee can receive intelligence information under House Rule X, with all security rules applied. Subpoenas can be signed by the chair or a designee.
