Supporting the goals of Overdose Awareness Day and strengthening efforts to combat the opioid crisis in the United States.
Sponsored By: Representative Trahan, Lori [D-MA-3]
Introduced
Summary
This resolution would recognize Overdose Awareness Day and push Congress to prioritize preventing opioid overdose deaths. Provisional CDC data show about 80,400 drug overdose deaths in 2024 and that over 90 percent of opioid deaths involved illicitly manufactured fentanyl. The text says substance use disorder is a chronic disease, that overdose deaths are preventable, and that Black and American Indian or Alaska Native people face higher overdose mortality. It would commit the House to advance bipartisan policies to reduce stigma and to work with states, localities, businesses, nonprofits, health care providers, patients, and families to support prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery from opioid use disorder.
