119-hres-681119th Congress

Commemorating the service of General Lafayette to the United States on the bicentennial of his farewell tour.

Sponsored By: Representative Wittman, Robert J. [R-VA-1]

Introduced

Summary

Commemorate General Lafayette’s service and the bicentennial of his 1824–1825 farewell tour. This resolution would recognize Lafayette’s volunteer leadership in the Revolutionary War, his use of personal funds and diplomacy to secure French support that helped trap Cornwallis at Yorktown, and his lifelong advocacy for emancipation, women’s rights, religious tolerance, and freedom of the press. It also notes Lafayette’s 1824–1825 travels across the 24 states, his Congressional address and White House appearance, and the American Friends of Lafayette’s 13-month, 24-state, 350-event bicentennial commemoration from August 2024 to September 2025.
