New federal grants for local police
If enacted, the Attorney General would create the "Make America Safe Again" grant program for State, local, and Tribal law enforcement. Agencies could apply for grants to hire and retain officers and pay bonuses. Grants could fund efforts against vehicle theft and carjacking, drug and fentanyl crimes, child trafficking, faster evidence processing, and prosecution. Grants could also fund use of bail, pretrial detention tools, and detaining or deporting noncitizens who committed crimes. The bill would appropriate $500 million to the Attorney General for fiscal year 2026. Those funds would be available until September 30, 2030. The bill would rescind certain unused balances from a prior law and allow some DOJ DEI funds to be used for these grants.
