Protect U.S. food and drink names

If enacted, this bill would define what counts as a "common name" for U.S. foods, wine, and beer. It would list many example names and say the Agriculture Secretary may use dictionaries, trade and market sources, and Codex standards when deciding. It would exclude certain wine appellations listed in 27 C.F.R. part 9 from being common names. The bill would require the Agriculture Secretary and the U.S. Trade Representative to negotiate agreements, memoranda, or letters to protect U.S. use of those names in foreign markets. They would give joint briefings to specified House and Senate committees twice a year. The bill would also treat any foreign rule that bans or disallows the use of a U.S. common name as a covered action.
