Police Officers Protecting Children Act
Sponsored By: Senator Sheehy, Tim [R-MT]
Introduced
Summary
Allows qualified active and retired law enforcement officers to carry concealed firearms in school zones. The bill would add two explicit exemptions to the federal school-zone ban in 18 U.S.C. § 922(q). One exemption would apply to a qualified law enforcement officer who meets the definition and concealed-carry authority in 18 U.S.C. § 926B. The other exemption would apply to a qualified retired law enforcement officer who meets the definition and authority in 18 U.S.C. § 926C. Both exemptions rely on those sections' authorization to carry a concealed firearm.

Allow some officers to carry in schools
If enacted, this bill would add specific exceptions to the federal ban on guns in school zones. It would let qualified active and retired law enforcement officers who are authorized under 18 U.S.C. §926B or §926C carry a concealed firearm in a school zone. For the new paragraph (2)(B) exemptions, the firearm must be concealed. The change would take effect upon enactment.
