Study to Protect Cahokia Mounds

If enacted, the Secretary of the Interior would do a special resource study of three Illinois sites. Those sites are Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, Emerald Mounds, and Pulcher Mounds. The study would evaluate national significance and whether the area should become a National Park System unit. It would list preservation, protection, and interpretation options. It would estimate federal costs for acquisition, development, operation, and maintenance. The Secretary would consult with federal, state, and local governments, applicable Indian Tribes, nonprofit groups, and other interested people. The Secretary would submit a report to Congress. The report would go to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and the House Committee on Natural Resources. The report would be due within three years after funds are first made available. Any spending would depend on Congress approving the money.
