Arctic Refuge Protection Act of 2025

Sponsored By: Senator Markey, Edward J. [D-MA]

Introduced

Summary

Designates a portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Coastal Plain as federal wilderness. The bill would add approximately 1,559,538 acres to the National Wilderness Preservation System under the Wilderness Act, using the Coastal Plain map dated October 20, 2015 (Map ID 03-0172), and would supersede any provision of the National Wildlife Refuge System Administration Act that conflicts with that wilderness designation.

Protect Arctic Refuge Coastal Plain

This bill would designate about 1,559,538 acres of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge coastal plain in Alaska as wilderness. The area is shown on a map dated October 20, 2015 (Map ID 03-0172) available in the Secretary's offices. If enacted, the land would be added to the National Wilderness Preservation System and the change would take effect upon enactment. The designation would restrict development and most extractive uses, benefiting conservation, subsistence, and recreational users while limiting commercial or resource development on those lands.
