  • Flight schools and aviation maintenance schools that meet the cited Federal Aviation Administration rules would likely be easier to afford for trainees, which could widen access to aviation career training.

Use 529 for aviation training

If enacted, you could use money from a Section 529 college savings plan to pay certain aviation training costs. Covered costs would include tuition, fees, books, supplies, and required equipment. It would cover aviation maintenance courses at FAA Part 147 schools and commercial pilot training at schools under FAA Part 61 or with a Part 141 certificate. This change would apply to 529 plan distributions made after the bill becomes law. To the extent distributions follow 529 rules, these withdrawals would not be taxable or penalized.
