Sponsored By: Senator Lankford, James [R-OK]
Introduced
Summary
Creates a mandated, first-of-its-kind threat assessment of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) at or within 100 air miles of U.S. borders. It would require the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security to lead a coordinated, multiagency study and complete the assessment within 1 year, then deliver an unclassified report, an optional classified annex, and a congressional briefing.
Show full summary
- Federal security and intelligence agencies would have to coordinate and provide input for a full review of U.S. detection, identification, and counter-UAS capabilities near borders.
- People who lawfully operate drones near borders would see how their data use, privacy, and civil rights are reviewed because the assessment must describe relevant policies and procedures.
- Congress would receive an unclassified report and a briefing that assesses current authorities and whether new authorities or resources are needed to achieve complete air domain awareness and to counter malign UAS threats.
