Introduced
Summary
Temporary reinstatement of Stafford loan authority for graduate and professional students. This bill would treat the 2012 termination of the authority to make Federal Direct Stafford Loans to graduate and professional students as temporary and would restore that lending authority only through June 30, 2023. It would also exempt the amendment from certain Higher Education Act rulemaking and negotiated rulemaking requirements to speed implementation.

Temporary Stafford loans for grad students
If enacted, the bill would temporarily let the Department of Education make Federal Direct Stafford Loans to graduate and professional students. The authority would remain in effect until on or before June 30, 2023. If enacted, this change would take effect upon enactment. The bill would also say the amendment does not have to follow certain HEA rulemaking steps, which could speed implementation. The bill does not set new loan amounts or change other Stafford Loan terms beyond the temporary reinstatement.
