TRUTH in Labeling Act
Sponsored By: Senator Blumenthal, Richard [D-CT]
Introduced
Summary
Creates a new front-of-package nutrition labeling system that would prominently flag foods “High in” added sugars, sodium, or saturated fat. It would also require disclosure of non-nutritive sweeteners next to those labels and set age-specific reference values for infants and toddlers to guide the labels.

New front-of-package nutrition labels
This bill would require new "High in" front-of-package labels on many foods. Each package would show separate labels for added sugars, sodium, and saturated fat with a conspicuous exclamation icon. Packages must show Daily Reference Values and percent Daily Values for adults, children ages 1–3, and infants up to 12 months. If a product contains non-nutritive sweeteners, the label would say so and state they are not recommended for children next to any "High in" label. The Secretary would have to finalize the rule within 180 days after enactment but may issue the rule first and add infant/child reference values later. The Secretary could also revise the federal "low sodium" claim limit to 115 mg per reference amount or 115 mg per 100 grams.
