Bill Overview
Analyzed Economic Effects
2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.
Pilot grants to hire medics
If enacted, the Department of Defense would run a three-year pilot to help hire and train separating or recently separated service members for health jobs. Nonprofit clinics, nursing homes, federally qualified health centers, and similar providers in medically underserved areas could apply for grants to pay for hiring, retention, and training tied to licensing. A single recipient could get up to $600,000 for the initial three-year award and $200,000 for each additional year; grants may be renewed up to two one-year renewals. Congress would be asked to authorize $5 million per year for fiscal years 2026–2030, and up to 10% of each year’s money could pay administrative costs. If training paid by a grant is eligible for VA Chapter 33 educational assistance and the trainee can use that assistance, the DoD would coordinate so the VA pays instead of the grant.
Recommendations to help military medics
If enacted, the Secretary concerned would study barriers that stop military medics from getting civilian health credentials. The study would look at translating military credentials, standardizing equivalents, bridge programs, SkillBridge timing, and state licensing rules. The Secretary must consult States, VA, HHS, and Labor and send recommendations and an implementation plan to Congress within 180 days.
