More U.S. help to stop illegal fishing
If enacted, this bill would let the Navy and Department of Defense include countering illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in foreign security force training and support. It would define IUU fishing by reference to the 2001 International Plan of Action and define "Secretary" as the Secretary of the Navy and "Commandant" as the Coast Guard Commandant. The Navy and Coast Guard would seek joint patrols with foreign partners to fight IUU fishing, transnational crime, and improve regional security. They would jointly report to Congress within one year and annually after, naming regions and countries interested in cooperation, any resource shortfalls, recommendations to improve programs, and assessments of partner operations. The bill does not itself authorize new appropriations.
