Sponsored By: Senator Barrasso, John [R-WY]

In Committee

Summary

Upgrade 9-1-1 in National Parks

This bill would require the Interior Secretary to assess park emergency communications within one year of enactment. The assessment would check which centers have Next Generation 9-1-1 systems. It would estimate costs to buy, maintain, and operate those systems. The Secretary would send the report to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The Secretary would also send it to the House Natural Resources Committee and post it on the Interior website. Within one year after that report, the Secretary would make a plan to install Next Generation 9-1-1 systems. The plan would cover park centers identified by the assessment. The plan would be developed with state and local emergency officials, local stakeholders, and federal agencies. A superintendent could exclude centers where sufficient systems are already installed or being installed. The bill would also define key terms like "emergency communications center," "interoperability," and "Next Generation 9-1-1 system."
