Aviation Medication Transparency Act of 2026
Sponsored By: Senator Duckworth, Tammy [D-IL]
Passed Senate
Summary
public, regularly updated FAA medication list gives pilots and air traffic controllers clear, public rules on which prescription and over-the-counter drugs are allowed, restricted, or prohibited for medical certification.
Show full summary
- Pilots and air traffic control specialists: They get a single public reference that lists allowed medications, contraindications, whether FAA review is needed, and medications labeled “Do Not Issue” or “Do Not Fly.”
- Medical examiners and health providers: They receive a user-friendly list on the FAA website and, where feasible, on MedXPress, plus a way to contact the FAA with questions.
- FAA and aviation stakeholders: The FAA must publish the list within 1 year and update it within 1 year after publication and whenever its medical Guide or policy changes, including monthly Guide updates when applicable. The law requires broad pre-publication consultation with pilots, controllers, medical groups, schools, and operators. The list is a transparency measure, does not create new funding, and does not change liability for adverse outcomes.
