119-s-3705119th Congress

Semiquincentennial Congressional Time Capsule Act

Sponsored By: Senator Tillis, Thomas [R-NC]

Became Law

Summary

This law creates a _congressional time capsule_ to be built by the Architect of the Capitol and sealed in the Capitol Visitor Center by July 4, 2026. The Speaker of the House, the House minority leader, the Senate majority leader, and the Senate minority leader jointly decide the contents, which must fit size limits (50 inches wide, 32 inches deep, 48 inches high) and be made of durable, low-degrading materials like metal or archival paper. The capsule will remain sealed until July 4, 2276, when leadership will present it to the 244th Congress, which will determine how to preserve or use the items. The Architect will install a plaque and carry out the burial using existing Capitol complex resources.
