Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

$40 million annual civics grants

If enacted, the bill would authorize and appropriate $40 million for each fiscal year to carry out this subpart of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The money would come from Treasury funds not otherwise appropriated. Funds would be available upon enactment and distributed through state and local education agencies, schools, and program providers. Families might see more civic programs, but the money would be shared across many places so household effects would be small.

More civic and media education in schools

If enacted, the bill would broaden what counts as government and civics education that schools may offer before, during, and after school. Examples include mock elections and model congresses, lessons on the Constitution and Bill of Rights, stories of underrepresented Americans' civic participation, service learning, trips to Washington or state capitals, meetings with community groups and officials, student governance and journalism, media literacy (including social media), respectful debate and problem solving, voter registration help, and online or video game learning. Schools and program providers would be allowed to include these activities as well-rounded educational opportunities upon enactment.
