Study to protect Plum Island
This bill would require the Secretary of the Interior to study Plum Island in New York. The study area would include the Orient Point facility and all real and personal property, transportation assets, and related infrastructure that support Plum Island. The study would assess whether all or part of the area should become a National Park unit, a National Wildlife Refuge unit, or be protected by other means. It would evaluate the area's national significance, consult federal, state, and local agencies and private groups, and estimate federal costs for acquisition, development, interpretation, operation, and maintenance of any alternatives. If money is first made available to carry out the study, the Secretary would have to send a report of findings and any recommendations to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee not later than 3 years after that money is first provided.
