WIPP Economic Assistance Assurance Act of 2026
Sponsored By: Senator Heinrich, Martin [D-NM]
In Committee
Summary
Changes the timing of WIPP-related economic assistance so payments continue as long as transuranic waste shipments continue, rather than stopping after a fixed 14-year term. It replaces the old "14-year Authorization" framing with language that ties payments to the actual end of shipments.

Continued WIPP community payments
This bill would let communities that receive Section 15(a) payments from the WIPP law keep getting those yearly payments. Payments would continue each fiscal year until the fiscal year when transuranic waste shipments to or from WIPP have been terminated. The bill would remove the original 14-year expiration and change the subsection heading, and it would not set dollar amounts or add new funding.
