Sponsored By: Senator Cotton, Tom [R-AR]

In Committee

Summary

Would extend Section 702 authority under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act by three years, setting its sunset to April 20, 2029. It does this by updating sunset dates in the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 to that date and leaves existing statutes, programs, funding, and operational authorities unchanged.

Keep national surveillance authority until 2029

This bill would extend the Section 702 surveillance authority through April 20, 2029. It would do this by replacing the temporary sunset phrase "two years after the date of enactment of the Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act" with the fixed date April 20, 2029 in specified FISA Amendments Act provisions. The change would take effect upon enactment and would not itself appropriate money or change other rules. If enacted, this would keep existing intelligence collection tools in use and could affect government collection of communications and privacy protections.
