FTC study of gas prices
This bill would require the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to study anti-competitive or collusive conduct in oil and gas markets and actual consumer prices. The study would analyze whether companies use money in ways that do not expand fuel supply, including reduced production investment or stock buybacks. It would check if such conduct could inflate consumer costs, delay fuel production or delivery, affect investment in new supply, or limit alternative fuels and vehicle technology. The FTC would report results and recommendations to specified congressional committees within one year of enactment and annually for two more years. The bill would let the FTC hire up to 50 extra staff, exempt the study's information collection from the Paperwork Reduction Act, and authorize $15,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2027 and 2028.
