Federal weather data for building codes
This bill would set up a federal working group led by the OSTP Director with USGCRP and the Mitigation Framework Leadership Group. The Under Secretary of Commerce would fund and identify research to produce a consistent set of forward-looking long-term meteorological data that models extreme weather and environmental trends. The Under Secretary would also give mesoscale meteorological information to the NIST Director when appropriate or when NIST asks. The NIST Director, with the Under Secretary, would publish the data, find federal and non-federal standards and code efforts, and advise and help standards and building-code groups use the data. NIST would carry out work through its Fire Research Center, the National Windstorm Impact Reduction Program, and other authorities. The bill would also define terms like "Director," "Under Secretary," "extreme weather," "other environmental trends," and require the Director to define "long-term." These duties would take effect upon enactment.
