Safer school bus routes for families

If enacted, the bill would expand the Safe Routes to School program to cover planning, design, and projects for school bus routes and stops. Grants would be available for infrastructure on a school bus route, such as sidewalks, traffic calming, crosswalks, waiting areas at stops, and traffic diversion. Grants would also fund noninfrastructure activities like public outreach, traffic education and enforcement near routes, and student bus-safety sessions. The bill would add school bus stop safety and those Safe Routes infrastructure projects to the Highway Safety Improvement Program and would define “school bus route” to include routes and stops approved by the local education agency. These changes would take effect upon enactment.
