Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Fuel economy review triggered by gas prices

This bill would require the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to start a review if gasoline prices rise much faster than overall inflation. The trigger is gasoline prices rising at least five times faster than overall inflation for any period of 180 days or longer, using Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The review would check whether current fuel economy standards achieve the maximum feasible average fuel economy. If the trigger is met, NHTSA would begin the reevaluation process after enactment.

Higher fuel-economy fines for manufacturers

This bill would raise two monetary penalty amounts used to enforce car fuel economy rules. It would change one per-violation amount to $25 and another per-violation amount to $50 in 49 U.S.C. 32912. The change would apply to parties subject to that section and would take effect upon enactment.
