119-s-498119th Congress

United States Colored Troops Congressional Gold Medal Act

Sponsored By: Senator Booker, Cory A. [D-NJ]

Introduced

Summary

Honors the United States Colored Troops with a Congressional Gold Medal to recognize their bravery and service during the Civil War. This bill would authorize a posthumous, collective award to African Americans who served with Union forces and direct the Secretary of the Treasury to strike a gold medal with suitable emblems and inscriptions. The medal would be given to the Smithsonian Institution for display and research, and the Smithsonian is urged to make it available at locations tied to the United States Colored Troops. The Secretary may strike and sell bronze duplicates to cover costs and the U.S. Mint Public Enterprise Fund may be used to pay for the medals.
