Show full summary
- Teacher candidates: Would raise the maximum annual TEACH Grant from $4,000 to $8,000 and require disbursements to be applied toward the full cost of attendance so grants better cover college expenses.
- Early childhood and high-need schools: Would let service in high-need early childhood education programs count toward the TEACH service obligation, widening the types of jobs that satisfy the requirement.
- Program rules and funding protection: Would narrow institutional eligibility by excluding certain institutions, add an electronic certificate to document completed service, prohibit monetary penalties for failing to serve, and exempt TEACH Grants from sequestration cuts.

Bigger TEACH grants, new rules
If enacted, TEACH Grant annual awards would rise to a maximum of $8,000 instead of $4,000. Aggregate lifetime caps would also increase to $32,000 and $16,000. Teaching in a high-need early childhood program would count toward the TEACH service requirement. If your school credits TEACH money to your account, it would have to pay your full cost of attendance. After you complete required service, the Department would send an electronic certificate, and the bill would bar the Secretary from creating monetary penalties for failing to finish TEACH service.
