New allergen labels for alpha-gal
If enacted, this bill would add Galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (called alpha-gal) to the federal list of major food allergens. Food makers, processors, and retailers would need to follow allergen labeling rules for alpha-gal. The rule would cover ingredients from non-catarrhine primate mammals and red algae in the order Gigartinales. The Health and Human Services Secretary would be able to exclude mammal-derived ingredients when there is no detectable alpha-gal above an established limit (for example, ingredients from alpha-gal‑knockout mammals). The change would start 18 months after enactment.
