More help for pregnant people and babies
This bill would create a new infant mortality pilot grant program run by HRSA. It would authorize $10 million each year for fiscal years 2025 through 2029 to fund local projects. Grants would go to county, city, territorial, Tribal, or certain State health departments. Grants could last up to five years. The Secretary would prefer projects in the 50 counties (or county groups) with the highest infant death rates and projects focusing on birth defects, preterm/low birth weight, sudden infant death, maternal complications, or infant injuries. Grantees must file an initial report within one year and yearly reports after that. No more than 10% of each grant can be used for program evaluation. Funds could pay for community needs plans, outreach to at-risk mothers, rural outreach, public education campaigns, counseling and treatment programs, and coordination of local services.
