A resolution to support the naming of certain United States Navy ships after notable civil rights leaders and to strongly encourage the Department of Defense not to change the names of such ships.
Sponsored By: Senator Schiff, Adam B. [D-CA]
Introduced
Summary
Honoring civil rights leaders through Navy ship names. This resolution would express the Senate's view that the John Lewis-class fleet replenishment oilers play a vital role refueling Navy ships and aircraft assigned to aircraft carriers and would designate the first ship in the class as named for Congressman John Lewis. It lists other ships in the class named for civil rights figures, including Harvey Milk, Earl Warren, Robert F. Kennedy, Lucy Stone, Sojourner Truth, Thurgood Marshall, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Harriet Tubman, Dolores Huerta, Joshua L. Goldberg, and Thomas D. Parham, and it strongly encourages the Department of Defense not to change those names.
