A resolution expressing support for the designation of September 2025 as "Hawaiian History Month" to recognize the history, culture and contributions of Native Hawaiians and reaffirm the United States Federal trust responsibility to the Native Hawaiian Community to support their well-being.
Sponsored By: Senator Schatz, Brian [D-HI]
Introduced
Summary
Honoring Native Hawaiian history and culture is the resolution's main goal. It would designate September 2025 as Hawaiian History Month, recognize Native Hawaiians as the indigenous people of Hawai‘i with about 650,000 people today, cite historic facts including a late-19th-century literacy rate above 90 percent, the Kingdom's international recognition until the 1893 overthrow by U.S. forces and Public Law 103-150's 1993 expression of regret, and encourage federal agencies, schools, and civil society to hold programs, ceremonies, and educational activities that support language and culture revitalization.
